I realized in all of this I haven't said much about Strays. Sometimes my thoughts run to other things and since a blog is just that...your thoughts... you might find anything on here.
I've had more fun writing Strays then you can have with your clothes on. The editing is another story and two editors later, I've still found a couple of typos. Ah-well! The cover was fun as was the interior design. I feel my designer captured just what I wanted on both counts. But the story, and creating that is the passion.
Strays is a fictional tale of a young woman whose life just isn't going the way she dreamed it would She finds herself settling for less and has definitely strayed away from her dreams and goals. Disillusioned and miserable, she's been laid off from her job in Atlanta and dealing with a less than wonderful relationship. So Jane, that's our heroine, borrows a cabin in the Smoky Mountains to take stock of her life and figure out where to go from where she stands at the moment.
When Jane finds herself literally hit over the head, she finds her answers in the guidance of another stray...a dog named Max. She's drawn into a world beyond the busyness of her own thoughts and the chaos of life; one that opens her to her purpose the meaning of life.
All the wisdom and insight is delivered through the plants and animals that share this world with us. But much more than a story of talking animals and astute trees, Strays brings an understanding of what is enough, how we navigate and create our lives and what we miss by looking without instead of going within.
The stories in the book are old legends and tales I heard as a child, each brings with it a sort of "Ah-ha" moment. I have altered them slightly to fit the story, but they remain charming and wise. From the feedback, each reader takes away a lesson or perspective that changes the way they look at not only their lives, but life in general.
Some of what you will find in Strays are stories like how the dog became man's best friend, why the Snake Society used to be just like ours, what changed them and what they may predict for humans. When you read it you will find out what the acorn represents and what your emotions are really telling you...all little secrets we, as humans, have managed to isolate ourselves.
The best feedback I have gotten so far, is this book can change your life if you let it.
Give it a read!

I am reading your book. While eating breakfast at a local restaurant, I forgot to bring my newspaper and I have to read when I eat. But wait! Is that a book on the counter? Why, yes it is. So I bought it. I wasn't expecting much, but boy was I surprised. Very good writing and a wonderful story. You've got it girl! Keep on writing.
ReplyDeleteJust finished _Strays_ and so enjoyed the first chapter of the untitled sequel, I came searching. Hope that it is well on its way to life as I want to hear the story of Mama Max's kitten and the further adventures of Jane and Max.
